On Team Flowd’s behalf – we want to wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy holidays!
Flowd turns one! Today, December 7th, we are celebrating our 1st birthday! The last year has been a massive adventure for Team Flowd. To celebrate, we put together a little snapshot of some of the statistics from the first year, as well as a brand-new trailer for Flowd. Here’s to an even better 2nd year for Flowd – The Music Lovers’ Social Network!
Who: Jax Panik What Genre: Dance / Pop Where Active: South Africa Homepage:www.jaxpanik.com Flowd Page:www.flowd.com/JaxPanik Your Background in a Nutshell:Jax Panik was started as a parody, a sort of mock pop star that initially refused to play live. He only distributed his music online, making use of fan-generated content and using social media/networks to promote himself. Since then he has evolved into a producer that collaborates with a host of artists and performers. Contact: john.maclennan99@gmail.com Highlighted Track: Jax Panik – Dinosaur
1) Jax Panik – you have a very distinct sound. Where did this come from, what do you call it and where can people hear it?
I Am Jax Panik was released with a Hyper Pop mentality but Jax Panik has since evolved into a much more dance orientated sound. Our live shows are very energetic and a greater effort is being made to portray that with the new album that’s currently under construction.
2)What kind of music do you listen to most? Do you stick in one genre or is your taste more versatile? What are some of the best songs you´ve heard lately? And where?
The range of music I listen to is really diverse but I’ve been listening to allot of dance music lately. Knife Party, Wolfgang Gartner, Porter Robinson, Madeon, David Guetta and Calvin Harris have ben on high rotation. The majority of music I listen to is online – on youtube more often than not!
3) Tell us about your studio process. When did you have time for a studio session the last time, how long was it and did something interesting come out of it? A world first exclusive here is of course welcome!
Being a producer, I spend allot of time in studio producing music either for the upcoming Jax Panik release or other artists. I’m currently working on a couple of new artists/projects that’ll find their way across the airwaves soon! The new Jax Panik stuff is sure to have you dancing fairly soon too. We’ll keep the Flowd team and our followers posted!
4) You are very actively engaged in social media; you regularly “talk” with your fans and seem to be very close with them. What’s the philosophy behind this and how much time does it take / day? What are you looking to achieve using Flowd?
Social media has been extremely important; as it was the only way to get our music heard before we started playing live. Fortunately we built a very loyal following because of that and we try our very best to maintain the relationships with our fans despite being extremely busy both on the road and in studio. We’re active on Facebook, Twitter, jaxpanik.com and Flowd!
5) The Jax Panik crystal ball. What does it display for 2016, in 5 years from now? I have plans to start playing abroad and I wish to collaborate with accomplished artists on upcoming releases. Apart from that, my shows are speedily progressing into an experience that’s equally at home in the club as it has proven to be at festivals across South Africa. With all of that in the pipeline I can only hope that I’ll be playing high profile gigs in the hottest clubs and arenas around the world as well as producing killer radio hits!
1) Ferry, your touring life at the moment is probably pretty demanding. How do you wind off when getting back home to family and friends?
It is very demanding. When I get home I try to spend as much time as possible with my family. I have a three year old daughter and I want to spend as much time as I can with her.
2)You literally exploded onto the global electronica scene with the “Out of the Blue” anthem in 1999, soon 13 years ago. Since then there’s been a massive amount of remixes of that track – have you countedthem and which has been your favorite so far? Any quirky ones out there you’d like to mention also?
Too many to count really. No remix in my mind that really has been my favorite. I don’t even think I have heard all the remixes that have ever been released!
3) When you reflect on the trance music from the 90’s compared to today, how do you see it has evolved? Is there something you miss from the older sound?
One thing that I definitely can see is that different genres are blending together. A lot of house tracks have a trance-like break and there are a lot of house producers working with hip hop artists as well.
4) You’re pretty active in social media. What are your favorite tools and how much time do you spend communicating with your audience through social media / day?
I recently started using the iPhone which I really enjoy. It is so easy to update your social media with this device. I think I normally spend about an hour a day to communicate through social media. I love using Twitter, Facebook, Flowd, Foursquare and of course to check my ferrycorsten.com website!
5) What has been the best tune of this year so far in your opinion and who’s the producer to look out for in 2012?
Picking one tune would be really hard but I really liked the outcome of ‘Brute’ which I made together with Armin van Buuren.
Who: Sied van Riel What Genre: That one box people put me in Where Active: The World Is My Playground Homepage:www.facebook.com/siedvanriel2 Flowd Page:www.flowd.com/hot/SiedvanRiel Your Background in a Nutshell:Did you just seriously put my background in the shell of a nut? Your background in a nutshell 2 then!! YouTube Channel:www.youtube.com/siedvanriel
1) Sied – you exploded onto the scene 5 years ago and have been growing since. What have been some of the best moments since then and what are you especially looking forward to at the moment?
Well, during the past 2 years it really took off. I started touring a lot and saw so many beautiful countries and people. Played at amazing events in places I maybe would have never travelled to if it wasn’t for music. I’m looking forward to push out all of the new tracks that I’ve been working on for the past 7 months. I’m ready to go again… been preparing pretty much all 2011 now.
2)Within your produced music, which is usually categorized as Trance, what is your secret sauce? What do you think is the specialty you bring to the table?
The deeper, darker, raw dry sounds. It really depends on the track thoug. I can do a big room trencher, but also do a more house/progg 127 BPM track. Many say bass-lines are my thing. And I do not stick to arrangements… I never use like a blue print or whatever. + I also never save presets in fx / plugins. This way it’s slightly different every time.
3) What is your favorite sound in electronic music?
Bass-lines, a sweet vocal accompanied by great melodic stabs. Sharp and or edgy percussion … most important it all has to create a massive vibe together no matter what genre.
4) What are the social media tools you use and in general what do you try to accomplish in social media? Has Flowd helped you in your social media efforts?
We use Flowd, Facebook and Twitter and I use it as a personal tool myself as well. It’s easy to communicate with people and friends + it keeps you busy when bored, ha! YouTube is solely to show off music, after videos and what not. I used to do video updates 3 years ago but then everybody picked it up so I kinda let that go. Flowd has definitely helped out a lot, as through it we can update the rest of the pages and the layout of Flowd is very, very relaxing.
5) For the young aspiring producer, making beats in his or their bedroom – what are your top 3 tips for taking the game to the big stages?
I’m gonna give you 1 tip extra for free.
1) Set goals.
2) Know what you’re doing and give it all you’ve got and then some!
3) Do your own thing, keep an own opinion but also be open minded for criticism.
4) Respect your colleagues.
Who: Fenech Soler What Genre: Electropop / Glam / Psychedelic / Zouk Where Active: Worldwide Homepage:www.fenechsoler.co.uk Flowd Page:www.flowd.com/fenech-soler Your Background in a Nutshell:A British electropop band from Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire that formed in 2006 Highlighted Track: Fenech Soler – Demons (I Killed Kenny Remix)
1) Fenech-Soler – you’ve been a rising name in the UK scene over the last years and growing internationally. Now that the spring-storm has settled, and you’re back on the road – how do you feel things are going? What are some of the things you’re working on right now?
Things are great at the moment. We’re currently on tour in Europe doing our first ever headline shows and the response has been incredible. It’s strange coming to cities that we’ve never been to and playing to people who know our record. I think that’s probably been the biggest change since we took a break in March; people know the record and know who we are. It makes touring much easier.
We’re currently demoing new tracks at the moment and trying to record ideas while on the road. It is kinda hard as there is loads of distractions like playing shows but it’s going ok.
2)In terms of genres or “style of music”, what do you feel describes your music the best and what has been some of the major influences when forming, what is now, the Fenech-Soler sound?
Well we played a show last night in Vienna where we were described as ‘Wave-Pop’ on all the promo so I think that would definitely have to be the ‘Fenech-Soler sound’. Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk certainly got us into making electronic music.
3) Tell us about the equipment you need in the music making process. What are your favorite tools and gadgets? Do you have an “on the road setup” as well, that lets you be creative when touring?
Well we have a load of equipment at home in our studio. Certainly a computer is at the center of the music making so id says that’s pretty necessary! Ross recently bought an iPad, which apart from being brilliant to watch The Sopranos on, also provides a good tool in recording basic ideas. i-phones too. Capturing things in sound check and at random times is key.
Andrew has purchased a number of synthesizers over the last few years. These would certainly be out ‘gadgets’ I suppose. Items like the Arp Odyssey, Moog Source, Korg MS-20, Yamaha CS-80 etc…
4)Social media and marketing for music artists seem to be walking hand in hand these days. Tell us – what do you like to do in social media and what sort of action do you like to see in return from the fans?
I think considering how people consume music these days and how people interact, it’s hugely important for bands to have a presence online and in the social media world. It’s completely positive. We enjoy being able to keep in close contact with our fans via Facebook, Twitter and Flowed etc. It should reflect bands personalities and be personal. I hate the ‘corporate update’ approach. We control all our sites.
We’ve been giving things away for free a lot recently. Free downloads in return for email address, that kind of thing. We only expect our fans to buy our music and come to shows.
5)What does the Fenech-Soler crystal ball say about your future? Where will you be in 5 years from now?
O2…. Either the arena or the phone shop.
Who: Solarstone What Genre: Trance, Progressive, Downtempo. Where Active: Worldwide. Homepage:www.solarstone.co.uk Flowd Page:www.flowd.com/hot/solarstone Your Background in a Nutshell:Irish born, Wales raised, ex body-piercer & descendent of Jazz legend Jelly-Roll Morton. Highlighted Track: Solarstone ft. Alex Karweit – Breakaway (Solarstone’s Phuture Mix)
1) Solarstone – your Electronic Architecture compilations has been described as “capturing the essence of trance”. Where do you draw inspiration from these and how do they come together?
The thinking behind the Electronic Architecture series is to, in some small way, redefine a modern edm compilation series as a blend of innovative music & art. I set out to recapture the spark from the halcyon days of modern dance music which, for me, were the days of early Renaissance – new music from new artists intricately mixed and exquisitely packed, a thing of beauty your finger would come to rest upon in 10 years time on a dusty CD shelf. Finding the music is a mammoth task in itself because I try to find new unknown producers who are doing something exciting, often co-producing the tracks to get them up to standard for the album. The mix itself is immersive and expansive, utilizing fragmentary stems from the masters and weaving them into a multi-layered collage, as opposed to standard end-to-end mixing which is the norm these days. For the packaging, I try to develop the abstract art further with each release, and also attempt something innovative with the promotion. For EA2 for example, I launched an interactive website where fans could deconstruct and then reconstruct the albums artwork and create their own version. It’s really just about trying to do something new.
2)You’ve been involved with dance music for quite some time. Tell us a bit about your very first gig. When was it, what was it like, what was the genre, did you know what you were doing or was it a more of a mess?
My first proper club gig was actually at Gatecrasher in Sheffield! I spent the previous day in a horrible state of nerves, throwing up, panicking and general hopelessness – but the moment I stepped into the booth it felt completely natural, and I’ve never looked back. I did know what I was doing on a technical level, but the first time you play in a loud packed club it does kind of blow your mind. It was a wicked gig though, I still get messages from ‘Crasher kids mentioning that night.
3) While in the studio, what’s your process like? Do you have any favorite old classic hardware in it? What about the studio monitors – what brand do you prefer?
I still favor hardware where possible, my Nord Lead and Nord 2 are still used a lot to this day, plus the trusty Virus Ti is a great bit of kit. I avoid ‘obvious’ VSTi especially un-editable plugins, I love to create sounds, synthesis is still a hobby to this day. I find that VST synths aimed at other types of music are great tools for making my kind of trance music, because it is more organic than digital sounding. My guitars play a large part in what I do, with the amount of processing tools available it’s very satisfying to create, for example, a pad patch out of processed guitar notes. I recently created a Clare Stagg Pad Patch (great singer I have been working with on the new Solarstone album) using multi-samples of her voice. I don’t understand why so many producers rely heavily on presets these days when there is such a wealth of processing power available to create your own sounds. My baby grand piano is essential too, I write all the melodies and chords progressions on that first before I do anything else. On the monitor tip I use HR824 which are great all – rounders.
4) You’re active in social media – what are the networks you see as most important and why? Do you have favorites?
I’ve devoted too much time to some networks which disappeared in a cloud of smoke over the years, so these days I’m more cautious before taking the bait on a new platform for promotion. Obviously Facebook & Twitter are important as they are so popular, but Flowd caught my attention early on because it is dedicated to the parts of those platforms which are music orientated. It saddens me that some artists abuse those big platforms with ‘bought’ fans, followers and views to create the impression of popularity. For me, hype really needs to be backed up with substance. Self discipline is important though in the world of social media – it’s easy to spend too much time fraternizing with your fans, the creative / promotion balance needs to be kept in check!
I set up the world’s first & only Social Network Record Label ‘Solarswarm Recordings’ a couple of years ago, I figured that the social network platform would be a great way to enable trance lovers to interact and really affect the musical output of a record label. Members of the Solarswarm find and submit new tracks to the label for voting in polls using an interactive member-only media page and forum on the website. Once a track gets a 75% YES vote, the track gets signed. Then remixers are chosen in the same way. Members also submit their own photography or artwork to be used as the official release tile. It’s great fun for the members and we have released 11 great records so far!
5) As you have a fair bit of experience in the music industry over the last decade, what 3 tips would you give to a young aspiring EDM artist today who wants to be seen & heard?
Don’t follow the pack, be original & stick to your guns.
Who: Ørjan Nilsen What Genre: Trance/Progressive House Where Active: Everywhere Homepage:www.orjannilsen.com Flowd Page:www.flowd.com/hot/orjannilsen Your Background in a Nutshell:Working with music since the age of 7, professionally since the age of 18. Played piano, drums, clarinette and sang. DJ’ing since the age of 16. Highlighted Track: Preview of the album “In My Opinion”
1) You just recently passed the 20,000 fan-mark on Facebook. To celebrate, you gave out your first ever production for free. Now – the production sounded actually pretty professional. Was that really your first? If not – would you mind sharing the actual first one with your Flowd fans right here?
Haha, I’ll take that as a huge compliment, cause it WAS in fact my first original production! The thing back then was I had no contacts anywhere and stuck in Kirkenes, so if it had signing potential, I’ll never know.
2)You’ve truly exploded in the trance scene over the last year. What are some of the best moments from the last year?
Yea it has been an amazing couple of years, it’s hard to even keep up at times! I think seeing the hall in Brabanthallen filling up just before my set at ASOT500 is one of those moments, cause I was really nervous! And also playing in Australia and Los Angeles for the first time is right up there!
Still, the biggest moment must have been the release of my first ever artist album ‘In My Opinion’ which came out this summer.. The second proudest moment of my life (holding my daughter Angelica in my arms the first time is still, and will always be the proudest moment).
3) The place where you live (Kirkenes, Norway) is pretty far up north with little to no daylight in the winter. Yet, your music is uplifting and even sunny. How do you get inspired writing such music during the winter time?
I think the answer lies in the question there. What is it everyone long for during a cold, dark winter? SUMMER!! Sun, warm breeze, coconut umbrella drinks and chilling at a poolside! I get so inspired to make summerish tracks in the winter cause in my mind I’m someplace warm. I’m quite lucky as I get the best of both worlds living up here, cause during summer, the sun never sets!
4) You signed up to Flowd already a while ago. Do you feel it has helped you in your social media? How?
That I did indeed! Yea I think so, since it’s a social tool developed for musicians and those who want to keep track of their favorite artists! Plus the fact that I can post on Flow*d, twitter and facebook at once makes it perfect for me to use! I’m always trying to get more people on it, as I really like the concept of it!
5) Over the last year your travel schedule has started to fill up. What are the best places you’ve been to so far? Does it beat late nights in the studio?
Haha, if it beats late nights in the studio.. To be honest it’s impossible to compare the two, cause I love both things so much! Late nights In the studio is where I get out inspiration accumulated during my tours, and my tours is where I get an outlet for it, so I need both of them!
About places, there’s so many lovely places out there, but it was a lifelong dream going Stateside and to Australia, so visiting those countries was definitely a highlight for me personally.
Who: Chriss Ortega What Genre: Trance, Progressive House, Electronic Music Where Active: Worldwide Homepage:www.chriss-ortega.com Flowd Page:www.flowd.com/hot/ChrissOrtega Your Background in a Nutshell:DJ and Producer since 12 years. Labelmanager of Groovebox Recordings. Top remixer for artists like Roger Sanchez, Robbie Rivera, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Paul Van Dyk, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, IIO and many more. Highlighted Track: Alex M.O.R.P.H. & Chriss Ortega – Ocean Drive (Original Mix)
1)Chriss – you are an actively touring DJ / Artist. In your time off – where do you spend it? Do you prefer peace and quiet or partying through the night?
Yes I am touring a lot and when I am not on the road I like it a bit more quiet, doing some sports, chilling with my family, hanging around with friends or simply relaxing. But sometimes I get caught by the nightlife and visit some clubs to see what other DJs are doing.
2) You write a lot of tracks as collaborations with other DJs / artists. How does the collaboration process with other artists work and how do you draw inspiration for it?
The collaboration process is not really spectacular. We meet in the studio and have some jam sessions or someone has an idea and we work online by transferring all data files over the net. The inspiration comes naturally by hearing and creating different rhythm or melody patterns but the most important thing is your daily mood.
3) Electronic music goes hand in hand with technology. How big role the always evolving technology has in your music? What is your gear-setup like today vs. 10 years ago?
It changed a lot in the last years. 10 years ago I had a big mixer, lots of hardware synths and lots of external equipment. With the new technologies it becomes more easier to combine all your instruments, compressors and effects for a song and you can work faster than in the past. You can create all from one machine. That’s why I sold lots of my old devices. My actual set up is now a big Mac Pro, lots of software synths, 3 pair of different speakers and a few external devices.
4) You are very active in social media. What is your toolkit of choice and how do you use the different tools?
Of course social media has become a big part in our world and I use the most popular ones like Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud and Youtube but since a few months I do most of the stuff with Flowd because it fills the gap between Facebook and Twitter. Flowd is the perfect tool to connect with your fans and implements all music related aspects into one service. That’s simply amazing.
5) Studio sessions and long tours are the two totally different sides of artist life. Which one do you prefer and why? What is best in working in a studio and what is best in tour life?
That is a really difficult question because both sides have their pros. On the one side I love to be in the studio because I like to be creative and love to find something new but on the other side I also enjoy the touring life. It is an awesome feeling to get a directly response from the audience for what you are doing and I love to visit new places and see different cultures. So I cannot really say which side I prefer more.
